Hi Mindy,
It seems that I am in the minority here because I was able to get my SSD granted within 6 weeks of applying. My pain management Dr. told me that lupus is being recognized more and more by SS. My advice would be to apply first on your own and if you’re not approved hire an attorney. It seems that the attorneys take longer to get you approved because the more money that’s retroactive the more they receive when they get you approved. Have your medical records ready and make sure they are detailed and can prove that are unable to work anymore and when you fill out the application be very, very, descriptive of your limitations. Emphasis how much pain you are in and if you have a diagnoses of depression make sure that you put that on the application along with any other diagnoses you have, again be very descriptive. When I filled mine out I was so descriptive about how at times the pain was so bad I didn't know how much longer I could take it; both physical and mental. You should have your answer in six weeks and if you are not approved get lawyer, but again I would try on your own first. Good luck and my prayers are with you.
