My daughter was born with a heart defect and I read somewhere that mothers with lupus can have children with birth defects
Is there any proof or significance to that ?
Thanks
JC,
Women of child-bearing years are often told not to get pregnant because of the myriad of possible difficulties, although many of us has had successful pregnancies. My first son, born in my early 20's before diagnosis, is smart, friendly, handsome and an all-around great kid. My second, born in my late 20's, however, was 3 months pre-mature (miscarriage is very common), still undiagnosed and spent nearly 3 months in NICU. He has severe ADHD and other severe psychological and emotional issues. It's my belief because of a brain-bleed at birth.
I think our most common pregnancy issue is spontaneus miscarriage which can be devastating if it occurs often. It is important, if you decide to have a child to find a good OB/Gyn that handles high risk pregnancies.
It's a tough decision and you need to weight the pros and cons before deciding if you will be able to handle a child with challenges.
I hate to be so honest, but this is too important for "sugar-coating".
Hope this helps,
DeAnne
Hello Jcangel,
DeAnne as done a great explanation regarding Lupus and children...me and my youngest sister have Lupus but the eldest as never been tested through living abroad and we've inherited ours from our parent's.
My eldest sister was born with a murmer of the heart and my youngest she was born dead but don't worry to much as Like DeAnne as stated so many children are born in good health.
The link below explains heart defects in children and what problems can cause them.

Terri :)
Yes we do have high risk pregnancies. It was explained to me after I had my children that the risks of pregnancy are low weight/preemie babies or a heart defect and I had one of each. The preemie is the healthiest one in the family and the one with the heart defect never had a symptom. They found a tiny hole in her heart at age 21 and fixed it with an arteriogram scope, so no open heart surgery. Lupus is also a genetic illness. So lupus or another auto-immune disease can be passed down. It's been 11 generations of my family that have had it.
thanks for your responses. I am not looking to have another child, but was just curious if lupus could have actually caused her heart defect.
I have Factor V Leiden (blood clotting disorder) so I was required to take blood thinner injections during my pregnancy, so I now think those injections may have actually saved my daughter!
I had to take her to see a geneticist at 1 yr old, because of her heart and she also tested positive for hypothyroidism...the geneticist spent 5 minutes with her and said "I think she has connective tissue disorder...follow up with your cardiologist" and left.
She's 7 now and her joints pop all the time and they hurt. The pediatrician ran blood work and said all was normal, and that they are probably just growing pains.
I’m sorry she’s in pain. I hate it when children hurt. You may want to take her to a rheumatologist for more extensive blood work just to be sure. As we adults can testify it took us years to get diagnosed and part of that is not getting the proper blood tests done or monitoring symptoms by our physicians. Although Lupus is uncommon in children, it should be ruled out by a rheumy.
I pray she feels better soon!
Hugs- Tina
Hi Terri,
Hope you are doing well. Was out for a while and I missed you when I got back. You are so good at finding great articles. I am ignorant of how to post links, so you are a lifesaver.
So glad you are back, Mate. (I love saying that!)
XOXO,
DeAnne

Jcangel13,
Definitely take her to a Rhuemy if she may possibly have connective tissue disorder. If her joints are "popping" at that age, and because Lupus is possibly/probably genetic, it is very possible that she may test positive. If she comes back ANA neg insist on other tests. I am still ANA negative. However, a very wonderful Nephrologist found it through a kidney biopsy.
Best of luck to you and your daughter,
XOXO,
DeAnne
