I'm glad you posted this Ann. I had my vision checked yesterday, and everything is healthy. My opthalmologist said that Plaquenil can cause nerve damage. He did say that my close up vision has changed but that is just from becoming "less young" lol. I ordered a new pair of glasses with a purple shade and progressive bi-focals. Boo, hiss. My doctor offered to send a report to my Rheumie as well. Some docs play nice : )

'less young' I like that. I recall some time ago a G.P. telling me a spot on my hand was a 'maturity rash' (i.e. an age spot) it took me a few beats to catch on to what he was talking about! Kaz. - Seriously though, important eye health issue good that you are top of it.

I have taken 400 mgs plaquenil for 5 yrs and seeing eye doc every six months. In Sept. my visual field had may changes. went to retinal surgeon who .repeated dilation and did a dye study checking for macular pucker. A month later back to eye doc visual field changes again, back to retinal surgeon who did not see any problems. Yesterday eye appt. showed more visual field changes. Consult withretina doc who suggested Plaquenil toxicity. Rheumy had me stop plaquenil today and start taking 3000 mgs fish oil daily. Don't know what to expect for changes. hate uncertainity. I guess time will tell.

I take 400mg plaquenil daily and get annual eye exams, i am required to bring the results to my Rheumatologist evey time. So far so good, had 2 exams so far, next exam is actually next month, not looking forward to having my eyes dialated again but I have to do it.

It's funny you posted this now. I just had my yearly exam yesterday with the eye doctor and I let her know that I was on Plaquernil so she scheduled me for the special eye scan for two months from now. She said it takes a specific machine to do it and they wouldn't have it in their office until October. My Rheumy did tell me to let my eye doctor know on my next visit that I'm on the med but didn't require me get my eyes checked before starting it. My Ophthalmologist did say that any problems with my eyes from the med is not extremely common but can happen so they want to keep an eye on it.
