Anti-Malaise/Pain/Inflame Food

Spinach/Kale are listed on every nutritional chart as an anti-inflammatory food. I've gotten to where I eat this stuff cold out of the bag raw . . . belief me a far cry from where I was as a youth!

My main meal daily is 80% spinach/kale, which I in part credit with being able to function without Rx and good labs. I build the meal from this foundation, adding fish, vegies, etc.

It helps work everything through the system too. If I had to take meds, I'd definitely need help here.

Idioskosmos and Rebecca are suffering from fatigue and skin issues and as Rebecca correctly stated, her trouble is stemming from the inside.

No synthetic can replace nature, trouble is when combating illness the problem usually is getting enough of the good stuff into us.

Walmart has a $3 spinach/kale blend and Target has a $2 Baby Spinach bag same size. I live a simple life, but this I can't be without.

Thinking of you and trying to assist in some way.

Here is some pertinent information from the Lupus Foundation of America about kale and spinach:

"Kale and spinach, while high in antioxidants, also are rich in vitamin K, known for its anticoagulant factors, so talk to your physician if you normally eat large quantities of either of these vegetables."

For additional information about lupus and nutrition, see http://www.lupus.org/magazine/entry/abcs-of-nutrition

Whatever helps and make you feel better!!!!!!

I love spinach and kale! Unfortunately they can lead to kidney stones of the calcium kind. So if you are prone to kidney stones be careful eating large quantities of them and be sure to drink lots of water. I’m glad that changing your diet helped. I found that eliminating conventionally raised meat from my diet really helped. All of the hormones etc… they feed the animals really messes with me.

I can't remember who gave me this advice but I was told to eat spinach as often as I could. I'm going to try the spinach/kale blend. With my faith and the advice given at this site, I'm; going to rise above this Lupus thing and pain!

My daughter felt the same way and ate kale and spinach every day, almost every meal. She got sick and when her blood was drawn, she had an overdose of phosphorus and sulfur. People with lupus need to avoid sulfa/sulfur as diligently as avoiding the sun. She now has a high sensitivity to her favorite veggie, kale. A lot of people are following the anti-inflammation diet. The easiest plan is called the Autoimmune Paleo Diet. If you Google it, you will see websites and books to guide you.

I know I need to eat better. I have 2 issues that hold me back. My tastebuds seemed to be ruined after months and months of mouth sores, tongue sores, and overall mouth inflammation. So almost all foods taste the same …which is a really bad taste that then causes nausea. Hope stands bright though. I have not given up.

Sheila, I never knew that spinach and kale would contribute to sulfur/sulfa. I am extremely allergic to sulfa drugs and I react to sulfites in food. I was hospitalized as a kid because of being put on sulfa meds. I have trouble breathing and itch all over and get hives. When I was eating several servings of kale/spinach a day my skin was also itchy but without the hives. Thanks for sharing. Annemarie

Just as a caution: yes spinach is very very good. But it also has properties that can cause blood clotting if you eat it too much. For those of us with lupus that have issues with blood clots, eating spinach in large amounts is probably not the best idea.

I eat spinach and kale all the time!, maybe not every day but close to every other day with a piece of salmon and cous cous My favorite But I’m severly allergic to sulfa, and have the blood clotting disorder but never had an adverse reaction?
