I was just wondering, How do you guys deal with cold sores, on the lips?
I have had them since I was little and noticed that they come at a 2 year interval. So it seemed like last tuesday, by 2 year interval was up and it decided to come out and play.
With the lupus and all, how does that come into play with the cold sore healing?
is there any difference?
I'm also using that Abbreva brand, but is there any other brands out there that might be better or have less chemicals in it?
I get internal mouth sores, on the insides of my cheeks. Mine are from Methotrexate though. I have a prescription oral steroid paste that I use (Kenalog). I wonder if there's anything by prescription that works better for those? I've never had one, so I can't advise. I sympathize though, they look painful. :(
I forgot to mention to my doctor about the cold sores and I recently cut open the roof of my mouth from toast the other day, so there goes eating for awhile. :\
Im just glad two didnt appear like 2 years ago. That was a pain.
But thank you. I hope they go away soon.. I feel terrible going near students when I assist my martial arts class at school.
Hi…i’m in the UK and coldsores used to be the bane of my life…if I used cold sore creams…it would make the coldsores spread…I had Virulite recommended to me a couple of years ago…and I don’t know how it works…but it does (for me anyway)…I think it’s available on Amazon…(sorry…I sound like a cheesey ad)give it a whirl…!
Julie, thanks for the tip on the Abreva patches...didn't know they existed. I've dealt with cold sores all my life. Lysine vitamins didn't do much for me, nor did any of the creams. Abreva does help some, especially if I catch it as soon as I feel the slightest tingle. Good luck with finding a treatment that helps you Ibie!
I use abreva the minute I feel it coming. I also smear on lots of lysine ointment. If they get really bad I know there are prescription drugs that work really really well but you would have to ask doc. Good luck!! I know they are painful ;(
I would say the Abreva is your best bet unless you see your doctor. I almost always get them when I run a fever of ANY kind. It could very well be a trigger for you. Perhaps, if you start to feel it coming on, along with the Abreva take something that resuces fever. They certainly are a pain...
I also wanted to mention for those with mouth ulcers try good old fashioned listerine it has a pretty good antiseptic. There is also a product called peroxyl ( I think Colgate makes it) that also works pretty good. Then there is always the home remedy of warm salt water. Important to keep mouth really clean when you have them so rinse as much as you can throughout the day. Good luck to all!!
Believe it or not, honey (yes, the sweetener from bees) is a great antiseptic as well as the fact that it creates a terrific barrier against additional microbes from attacking an already inflamed area. It works on many other wounds as well.
I've just cleared a cold sore with "Virasorb" but alot of meds don't always work on all Lupus patients and sorry to hear you've suffered this since a child.
Although members will help in a large way suffering with them...you may also want to view this link also.
Thanks for all the advice! It stinks that one recently started to heal and about to go away and this morning another one decides to pop up. It's very aggravating, so I'm trying to trace back at what I previously ate or did to see if it might be a trigger of some sort (thanks for that suggestion DeAnne!) or that I'm stressing a tad too much. Not sure, but i'll keep some notes down on that part.
I haven't tried the lysine yet, but I'll give it a whirl! I called my doctor about it and he said that since I'm already on a lot of medication, he doesn't want to give me anymore, unless these sores appear all at once, in a cluster, instead of one by one.
But on the silly note, they make great war stories. Some of my friends asked what happened when these sores starts bleeding and I try and create some outrageous story in how I got into a battle with a bear.
But thanks again for all your suggestions! I hope everyone is doing well! :)
Your welcome and you know that...sorry to hear another one is appearing but it could be a slight flare with the worry you've had on doing exams and hopefully now the stress is'nt so bad your system might carm down.
What have i told you about your mates ignore their comments...that's pure ignorance mate.
I have to second what Tez_20 (Terri) said. I certainly think the stress could be a trigger and let's face it, unfortunately it's a trigger for many aspects of lupus. I have a great book that I go to for "Secret Food Cures". Some things the book comes up with seem "out there" but it's amazing how many work. I knew that the honey worked (preferably raw honey...not for children) mixed with 3 TBSP of apple cider vinegar. Dab with Q-Tip as open sores are highly contagious in the am and pm.
Now, this one is going to sound wierd, but Cyndi Antoniak, a producer from MSNBC does this. When she first starts to get "that" tingle, she takes clear nail polish and applies a light coat...this came from her dermatologist and is said to keep the blister from "blossoming". Told you it was odd, but if it tends to be a frequent issue it just might work.
Hello all! I've been dealing with cold sores since my early 30's, in mid 40's now. I've tried nearly everything. I have found that since I began the Plaquenil for Lupus that my cold sores have vanished. But when I was having outbreaks, at the first tingle I would pop 1000 mg of valtrex at the very first sign and then take regular doses for a week following. In regards to the horrible sores that I get on the inside of my mouth on a regular basis, I swish with Peroxyl several times a day. IT IS A LIFESAVER! Peroxyl is something that you can get over the counter in your toothpaste isle. Good luck and I hope this is helpful.
Thanks for your great input and contributions like yours helps members alot plus Peroxyl is also good for nose sores which is really handy to know...thank you Terri :)
