Dealing with Family

Family can be really insensitive, and also in denial. I hope you can find a group of understanding people who can support you and help you find tools to get better in every way.

My local lupus support group (20 years ago) was very closed minded and only wanted to talk abotu prednisone and lawyers- not emotions or alternative medicine. So I formed my own group in the church basement with 3 other lupus patients. And we talked about anything we wanted, but tried to stay solution-oriented so it didn't turn into a "poor me" downer experience. It was empowering. We could be real about what was going on, and then talk about what we were trying (yoga, diet, chelation therapy, etc) and what was working.

Also at one point I hired a psychologist and I went in and just ranted for an hour every week. It was great. It was the only place (besides my own little monthly support group) I could say what I really felt. I went for 6 weeks. Every time I left her office I had to stop at the restroom and drop a huge poop. gross, but metaphoric- I was literally dropping a load off!!
