Can asking help?

Ok so i haven't been on in forever

winter and college have kept me busy thats for sure

so its taken me over a month to figure out why ive been getting this horrendous migranes.... Stupid lupus

i think it's attacking something and making the bloodvessls and stuff in my head swell, like there's not enough blood n stuff getting up to it and it's all constricted and to top it off my pleurisy's acting up so that's what's making me think my immune system is getting aggrivated.

anyway the point of this is to ask you guys as others who are struggling is

Can i ask my doctor for an immunosuppressive? if so what might be best? naproxen isn't don't junk any more.

Also what else may help? I can't cut out gluten/wheat, i'm a college kid and it's alot of my diet.

I'm in this huge loop of exercise and forcing blood to pump helps but i don't have the energy to do that to feel better.

Also I am currently on Naproxen (500 2x daily) Clorazazone/muscle relaxer (500 2xdaily), Metotopolol (50 3x daily) asprin (81 mgX4 2xdaily) and tizanidine (8 mg at night), i know drugs interact badly

It'll be my main PCP cuz i don't even start to see a rhemy until the end of june and he's like 2 hrs away :( that was the closest they could find me that insurance covered and all that jazz

Please and thanks for the help all

Miss Mary

Hi Mary,

I have the same problems with the headaches and vasculitis on my brain. The only thing that has helped is prednisone but then I had lots of bad side effects. I wish I could help.

Meg

Mary,

I had the migraines too. I was placed on Elavil which is an antidepressant, but has been shown to help with migraine headaches. Antidepressants can also alter your pain perception so things don't hurt as bad. Depends on the antidepressant though. It worked for me. It also helped ease the migraine pain when I put an ice pack on my head. I have a gel hot/cold pack and it is wonderful because it curves to the shape of my head. It didn't make the pain go away, but it made it more bearable.

As for asking your doctor directly about meds... most doctors hate when patients give them those direct suggestions, but it depends on how comfortable you are asking your doctor directly about immunosupressants. Doctors usually try everything else and leave the suppressants as a last resort due to all the other problems and side effects suppressants can have (ex. high risk of infection, low blood cell counts, anemia, etc.). I would just let your doctor know that you really need some relief and what else can they suggest.

Take a look at the anti-inflammatory diet by Dr. Weil. I notice a difference when I cut out certain foods (mostly sweets). Lots of fruits, veggies, omega-3s (fish), whole grain, etc. Lots of fresh, natural stuff... not a whole lot of processed food like cheese, lunchmeat, Ramen. And, I still eat my wheat and gluten! It's rough doing any diet changes in college, but it can be done. If you do a diet change, do it in little steps so that your body is able to adjust gradually.

Hope this helps and your doctor is able to find some medicines to help you feel better!
